Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) ht
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is a device worn by the firefighters or rescue workers in an oxygen deficient environment. They provide breathable air in conditions such as in confined space or smoke filled area where there is acute shortage of breathable air. The SCBA sets are with filtered compressed normal atmospheric air.
A SCBA typically has three main components – Cylinder, Back plate and Face mask. The cylinder consists of air at high pressure. The back plate consists of the pneumatic system, harness, high and low pressure hose, demand valve, warning whistle. The facemask is what provides air to the wearer.

SCAB Features:
- Cylinder: It is made-up of fully-wrapped carbon-fiberglass composite material and comes with different ambient pressure. The ultra-light material is 70% lighter than steel and 30% lighter than, aluminium cylinders of the same weight. The ambient pressure is of 374 bar at 600°C and 300 bar at 150°C.
- Back-Plate: The back-plate is made of carbon composite. It is injection moulded and ergonomically designed so that it fits comfortably on the back of the wearer. The light weight plates are provided with inner padding for comfortable fit. It is used to carry the cylinder and consists of pneumatic system, harness, pressure gauge, reducer and demand valve.
- Pressure Gauge: Pressure gauge gives the direct reading of the pressure inside the cylinder. It is made-up of robust stainless steel & polycarbonate case with flexible rubber shroud. It has a Photo luminescent face-marking. The pressure is measured in bars.
- Reducer: The Reducer consists of the pneumatic systems and is attached to the backplate, the reducer must be connected to the cylinder outlet. A reducer helps in reducing the pressure from the cylinder which is at 300bars to a lower level of around 6bars for use at the demand valve.
- Demand Valve: The demand valve supplies air to the wearer on demand. The Demand Valve is first breath activated. It is made of thermoplastic material. The Demand Valve Hose is fire resistant and maintains medium pressure. It has bypass facility & reset button. The demand valve is connected to the facemask through the bayonet fitting, featuring a safety locking catch.
- Warning Whistle: Warning whistle gives a warning signal when there is low pressure in the cylinder. It automatically sounds when cylinder pressure falls to 50/55 bar. This leaves a 7.5 to 10 minute Safety Margin before the cylinder is empty.
- Face Mask: The face mask is one of the important components of SCBA set. It allows the wearer to draw air from the cylinder through the demand valve and provides protection from the environment. It has a polycarbonate face shield, an inner mask, a neck strap and 5 head strap. The strap is made up of neoprene or silicone material and helps the wearer to firmly hold the face mask over the head.
SCBA Application:
- Cylinder: PESO appr1. Firefighting: SCBAs are used by firefighters to provide them with a supply of clean air while they work in smoke-filled environments. oved, BS EN 150 7866:2012.
- Industrial environments: Workers in industries such as chemical plants, oil refineries, and nuclear power plants use SCBAs to protect themselves from inhaling hazardous gases, vapors, or particles.
- Emergency response: SCBAs are also used by emergency responders such as hazmat teams and search and rescue teams during chemical spills, natural disasters, or other hazardous situations.
- CE approved: EN 1146:2005
